Die zukünftige Messe Luxemburg, Luxexpo verknüpft sich mit einem großen öffentlichen Freiraum, der die Funktionen für den öffentlichen Nahverkehr aufnimmt Bus, Tramstation Kirchberg / Expo und Bahnhof Kirchberg. Den öffentlichen Raum begrenzen mit Auchan und îlot Utopolis zwei bestehende große Gebäudeensembles. Die nachhaltige Entwicklungsabsicht für das Areal Kirchberg machte eine differenzierte städtebauliche Einbindung der neuen Strukturen innerhalb der Master-planung für Kirchberg unabdingbar. Der Focus des Wettbewerbes und der daraus resultierende Ansatz des Preisträgerentwurfes liegt auf dem Neubau der flexibel einsetzbaren Messehallen, Verwaltungsbauten, Multifunktions- und Tagungs-bereiche und auf der Konzeption eines Messehotels. Darüber hinaus sind die wirtschaftliche Ver- und Entsorgungsinfrastruktur für die Messe und die Einordnung der Parkplätze für Messe und P+R Bestandteil der Planung. Die im Wettbewerbsentwurf dargestellte städtebauliche Einbindung in das Umfeld erlaubt es der Messe erstmals, ihrem Anspruch als Messepark gerecht zu werden. Die Funktionalität ist nach Ansicht der Auslober vorbildlich und ermöglicht neben der Ausführung großer zusammenhängender Messen auch die Organisation mehrerer flexibler und dennoch individuell zuordenbar gehaltener mittlerer und kleiner Ver-anstaltungen. Künftig wird die neue Luxexpo über 46.000 m2 Nutzfläche verfügen. Aufgrund der Gebäude-geometrie, des Nutzungsprofils und der konstruktiven Umsetzung ent-stand das Wettbewerbsmotiv eines weltweit einzigartigen Solar-Plus Messezentrums und damit eines richtungweisenden Zeichens für nachhaltiges Bauen. Die Messehalle wird in der Lage sein ohne fossilen Energieaufwand ihren Energiehaushalt alleine zu decken und damit die Umwelt nicht zu belasten. Wesentliches Entwurfskriterium war die weitgehend natürliche Belichtung und die Anordnung von Photovoltaik auf der optimierten und effizienten gefalteten Dachlandschaft.
As the future convention center of Luxembourg, LuxEXPO integrates a large public space with functions for the local public transportation of busses, the Kirchberg/Expo tram station, and Kirchberg train station. The public space is already limited by two large, existing building complexes, Auchan and Îlot Utopolis. The sustainable plan for development in the area required a differentiated, urban integration of the new structures following the master plan for Kirchberg. The focus of the competition and the eventual winning design encompassed the planning of a new versatile convention center, event spaces, multifunctional meeting rooms, and the design of a hotel. In addition, an economic solution to the utility infrastructure for the convention center and the integration of parking for the convention center and P+R were also components of the plan. The integration into the urban environment illustrated with this design entry allows the convention center for the first time to be designated as a convention center park. The functionality is, according to the competition committee, exemplary with its organization of flexible and individually separated small or medium-sized event spaces along with provisions for larger, more extensive convention events. Eventually the new LuxEXPO will provide over 46,000 m² for use. Due to the building geometry, user profile, and its physical implementation, a motive arose for the competition to develop a unique Solar Plus convention center and to act as a trend-setter for sustainable building. The convention center hall will be able to cover its own energy budget without the inclusion of fossil fuels and therefore without burdening the environment. An essential aspect of the design was the extensive use of natural light and the arrangement of photovoltaic panels on the structurally optimized and efficiently folded roof landscape.
