The Summer Pavilion BOWOOSS combines traditional wood construction with delicate lightweight technology. The result is an interdisciplinary research project, conducted using handcraft technology at the School for Architecture Saar, SAS, led by the B2E3 Institute for Efficient Buildings (Prof. Göran Pohl), Bauhaus University Weimar (Prof. Dr. Jürgen Ruth), the wood construction firm Stephan with the AWI, and the Institute for Lightweight Structures in Jena. The research approach focused on new insights into parametric architecture and their potential to be applied to traditional building materials and hand craftsmanship. The goal of BOWOOSS was the qualification of suitable design tools and interfaces in the production process. Generative form development and optimization methods were implemented in order to translate the CAD results into an entity that could be fabricated, transported, and constructed. The result is the interpretation of “heavy”, traditional wood construction to a composition of volume and material, lightness and space. The research pavilion BOWOOSS was to be outfitted with a structural system integrated into the envelope that, despite its complex form, could be realized only with simple tools. The structural system, whose design was based on biological precedents, consists of formed glued laminated lumber elements that form the hierarchical structural framework and function in spatial harmony with the envelope.
