Pohl Architekten haben zusammen mit Mecanoo und Metaform, Architekturbüros aus Holland und Luxemburg, den Wettbewerb für einen neuen Sportkomplex mit Schwimmhalle und Velodrom in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxemburg gewonnen.
Das Velodrom-, Multisport- und Schwimmhallenprojekt war von seinem Umfeld - einer subtilen, wellenförmigen Topographie - inspiriert. Die größte Herausforderung bestand darin, alle drei Funktionen unter ein Dach zu integrieren, dem landschaftlichen Kontext Respekt zu zollen und gleichzeitig eine Landmarke für die Stadt Mondorf-les-Bains zu kreieren.
Die Idee hinter der Positionierung der Gebäudebasis und der benachbarten Funktionen „Untergrund" resultiert aus maximaler Optimierung der bebauten Flächen und der Reduzierung der seitlichen Fassaden. Dies hat eine signifikante Auswirkung und ermöglicht dem Entwurf, im Kostenrahmen zu bleiben, es erlaubt eine Minimierung des Materialeinsatzes, optimiert die Betriebskosten und verbessert die Energieeffizienz des Gebäudes.
Das Projekt ist deshalb sehr kompakt, schließt aber großzügige und einladende Räume nicht aus. Der Haupteingang ist ebenerdig erreichbar, als Erweiterung des zentralen Platzes, der den Parkplatz, den zukünftigen Schulkomplex und das Sportzentrum verbindet. Der Zugang zu den drei Hauptfunktionen (Velodrom, Schwimmbad und Multisporthalle) und ihren dazugehörigen Cafeterien ist intuitiv und selbstverständlich. Durch die Hauptlobby werden die Nutzer weiter im Gebäude verteilt. Die simple und klare Geometrie ermöglicht Besuchern, Sportlern, Schülern und Angestellten eine schnelle und einfache Orientierung. Außerdem dient die Empfangshalle nicht nur als Verteiler, sondern wird wie ein echter zentraler Ort, ein Rückgrat des Komplexes behandelt.
Das Erdgeschoss ist hauptsächlich für Sportler (einschließlich Schüler) und Angestellte reserviert, das erste Obergeschoss für Besucher des Velodroms und der Schwimmhalle. Das Velodrom ist über drei Tunnel zugänglich, nämlich von der Lobby (im Falle einer Veranstaltung für Besucher im Innenfeld), den Umkleideräumen und den Büros der Luxembourg Cycling Federation, die von ihrem eigenen unabhängigen Seiteneingang im hinteren Teil des Gebäudes profitieren.
Die Haupt-Cafeteria im ersten Stock, die alle drei Hauptfunktionen visuell und physisch verbinden soll, ist in sich eine volumetrische Erweiterung der Lobby und daher direkt über eine große Treppe und zusätzliche Aufzüge erreichbar. Günstig zwischen dem Velodrom und der Multisporthalle gelegen, hat die Cafeteria eine privilegierte Lage mit Blick auf die Sportanlagen, mit Verbindung zu den Schwimmbecken und einen großzügigen Blick auf die grüne Landschaft.
Das Velodrom befindet sich solitär hervorstechend im Zentrum des Gebäudekomplexes und ist daher als ein einzigartiges Objekt von der nahegelegenen Autobahn und dem Seiteneingang zu erkennen. Der Kubus des Velodroms mit seiner transparenten Hülle ermöglicht dem Besucher den weiten Blick auf die umgebende Landschaft einerseits und zusätzlich die signalhafte Erkennbarkeit für die Ankommenden.

Pohl Architekten won a competition together with Mecanoo and Metaform, Netherlands and Luxembourg based architecture firms, to design a new Velodrome and a Sports Complex in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg. The Velodrome, Multi-Sports and Swimming Pool Complex project was inspired by its surroundings, a subtly undulating topography. Integrating all three functions under one roof was a main challenge in respect to the landscapes context and at the same time to create an architectural landmark for the city of Mondorf-les-Bains.
The idea behind the positioning of the building base and the adjacent functions 'underground' as much as possible results in a maximal optimization of built surfaces and the reduction of lateral facades. This has a significant impact on enabling the design to remain on target in terms of budget, it allows for minimization of the use of materials, optimizes the operational energy costs, and finally improves the energy performance of the building.
The project is therefore very compact, but it does not exclude generous and welcoming spaces. The main entrance is accessible by foot, as an extension of the central square, which connects the parking lot, the future school complex and the sports center. Access to the three main functions (velodrome, swimming pool, and the multi-sports hall) and their belonging cafeterias is intuitive and natural. The main lobby distributes the users further in the building. The simple and clean geometry allows visitors, athletes, students, and the employees to orientate quickly and easily. Moreover, it does not only serve as a flow-distribution area, but it is treated as a genuine central place, a spine of the complex.
The ground floor is mainly reserved for athletes (including the students) and employees, and the first floor for visitors of the velodrome and the swimming pool. The velodrome is accessible via three tunnels, namely from the lobby (in case of an event for visitors in the infield), locker rooms, and the Luxembourgish Cycling Federation offices, which benefit from their own independent side entrance at the rear of the building.
The main cafeteria on the first floor, aiming to connect visually and physically all three main functions, is in itself a volumetric extension of the lobby and therefore directly accessible via large staircase and additional elevators. Conveniently located between the velodrome and the multi-sports hall, the cafeteria has a privileged location, with an overview towards the sports facilities, connection to the swimming pools, and a generous view towards the green landscape.
The velodrome volumetry is positioned solitarily on the building base and therefore as a singular object is easily recognizable from the nearby highway and the site entrance. The simple silhouette of the velodrome is detached from the ground, hovering over the "green carpet", expressed by the roofs of all other functions, which formulare an extension of the surrounding landscape.
The cube of the velodrome with its transparent envelope ables the visitor a broad view, to the surrounding landscape and on the other hands side provides a signal-like visibility for the arrivals.
