Das LEICHTBAUINSTITUTjena wurde von Julia und Göran Pohl initiiert, um theoretische Entwicklungsansätze und praktische Erfahrungen in Architektur, Tragkonstruktion und Baukonstruktion symbiotisch zusammenzuführen. Darüber hinaus ist das LEICHTBAUINSTITUTjena frei und unabhängig von Planungs- und Bauinteressen bei Forschungs- unfd Entwicklungsvorhaben beteiligt oder beratend tätig.

Schwerpunkt des LEICHTBAUINSTITUTjena ist die Forschung und Entwicklung für Architektur, Tragkonstruktion, Baukonstruktion, für Materialien und Design. Am LEICHTBAUINSTITUTjena besteht eine reichhaltige Erfahrung in der Erforschung, Entwicklung, Konzeption und Umsetzung von weitgespannten Holztragwerken in Schalenbauweise, bei der Konzeption und Entwicklung von Membranbauten, bei der Erforschung von Anwendungspotentialen für Bauten mit Verwendung Faserverstärkter Kunststoffe (FVK), sowie bei mobilen und wandelbaren Konstruktionen. Die Inhaber des LEICHTBAUINSTITUTjena sind an Hochschulen mit nationaler und internationaler Ausrichtung tätig, beispielsweise am internationalen Studiengang „Master in Membrane- Structures“ an der Hochschule Anhalt, mit Professur von Göran Pohl an der Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft des Saarlandes, School of Architecture und Referenten bei Fachsymposien im In- und Ausland. Verschiedene aktuelle Fachpublikationen zu Architektur und Bionik, sowie zu Leichtbauweisen entstanden unter Mitwirkung oder als Herausgeber der Initiatoren des LEICHTBAUINSTITUTjena.

Das LEICHTBAUINSTITUTjena beteiligt sich an mehreren nationalen und internationalen Forschungsprojekten, u.a. als Mitglied im Forschungsnetz PLANKTON TECH, gefördert von der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft. An diesem Forschungsnetz sind Julia und Göran Pohl Gründungsmitglieder. Geleitet wird das Netz von Dr. Christian Hamm, Alfred Wegener Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung. Weitere Forschungpartner sind das Fraunhofer Center für Windenergie und Meerestechnik, das Bundesinstitut für Textil- und Verfahrenstechnik ITV Denkendorf, Universität Kiel, Universität Freiburg Botanscher Garten, Universität Berlin, Harvard Institute of Technology, USA,  Rutgers University New Jersey, USA. Göran Pohl ist innerhalb von PLANKTONTECH verantwortlicher Leiter des Forschungs- Teilbereiches für die Umsetzung von Diatomeenstrukturen in Architektur und Design.

Darüber hinaus ist das LEICHTBAUINSTITUTjena beteiligt an der Erforschung nachhaltiger Bausysteme bionisch inspirierter Holzschalenkonstruktionen „BOWOOSS“, Bionic Optimized Wood Shells with Sustainability. Antragsteller ist die HTW des Saarlandes, Fakultät für Architektur und Bauingenieurwesen – School of Architecture, Prof. Göran Pohl. Kooperationspartner sind die Bauhaus- Universität Weimar, Fachbereich Architektur und Fachbereich Bauingenieurwesen, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Ruth, mit Masterstudiengang ARCHINEERING, das Alfred- Wegener- Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung, die Universität des Saarlandes, Botanischer Garten, Fa. Paul Stephan.

Die Initiatoren des LEICHTBAUINSTITUTjena sind Mitglieder im BIOKON, dem bundesdeutschen Bionik- Netzwerk und BIOKON INTERNATIONAL, im VDI Fachbeirat Bionik, in B.E.N. Bionic Engineering Network des Saarlandes, Mitglied im Bionik- Kompetenznetz e.V. an der Universität des Saarlandes, Göran Pohl ist Kooperierendes Mitglied im IZES, Institut für Zukunfts- Energiesysteme, Saarbrücken.

The Lightweight Structure Institute Jena was initiated by Julia and Göran Pohl in order to symbiotically consolidate theoretical development approaches and practical experience in architecture, structural design, and construction. Furthermore, the Lightweight Structure Institute Jena is independent from planning and construction interests in its participatory or advisory activities in research and development projects.

Emphasis of the Lightweight Structure Institute is research and development for architecture and design, structural design, construction, and materials. At the Institute, comprehensive experience has been collected in research, development, concepts, and realization of long-spanning wood structures in a shell form, as well as in the research of potential applications for fiber reinforced plastics (FRPs) for structures, and in mobile and transformable structures. The leaders of the Lightweight Structure Institute are active at universities with national and international orientation, for example the internationally recognized degree “Master in Membrane Structures” at the Hochschule Anhalt, with professorship of Göran Pohl at the School of Architecture at the University for Technology and Economy in Saarland (Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft des Saarlandes (HTW)), and consulting for symposiums in Germany and abroad. Various current publications for architecture and biomimetics, as well as for lightweight structures were developed with contributions or published by the initiators of the Lightweight Structural Institute Jena.

The Lightweight Structural Institute Jena participates in several national and international research projects, for example as member of the research network PLANKTONTECH, promoted by the Helmholtz Community. Julia and Göran Pohl are founding members of this research network. The project is led by Dr. Christian Hamm, Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Oceanic Research. Additional partners are the Frauenhofer Center for Wind Energy and Oceanic Technology, the National Institute for Textile and Process Technology ITV Denkendorf, University of Kiel, University of Freiburg Botanical Garden, University of Berlin, Harvard Institute of Technology, USA, and Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA. Göran Pohl is the leader accountable for the research division for the application of diatom structures in architecture and design.

Furthermore, the Lightweight Structure Institute Jena participates in the research of sustainable building systems for biomimetics-inspired wood shell structures “BOWOOSS” (Bionic Optimized Wood Shells with Sustainability), initiated by the HTW in Saarland, School of Architecture, Prof. Göran Pohl with cooperation from Bauhaus University in Weimar, Department of Architecture and Department of Structural Engineering, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Ruth, with Master’s degree ARCHINEERING, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Oceanic Research, the University of Saarland, Botanical Garden, the firm Paul Stephan.

The initiators of the Lightweight Structure Institute Jena are members of BIOKON, the national German Biomimetics Network, and BIOKON INTERNATIONAL, VDI advisers in the area of biomimetics, in B.E.N. Bionic Engineering Network of Saarland. Göran Pohl is a cooperating member of IZES, Institute for Future Energy Systems, Saarbrücken.
