Die bayrische Gemeinde Inzell war Austragungsort der Eisschnelllauf-Weltmeisterschaften 2011. Aus diesem Anlass sollte das spektakulär am Fuß der Alpen liegende bestehende Eisstadion modernisiert werden. Um optimale Wettkampfbedingungen zu bieten, wurde die Eisschnelllaufbahn, bisher eine Außenanlage, mit einem dynamisch geformten, weithin erkennbaren Dach versehen. Die neue Halle bietet ein Maximum an Flexibilität sowohl für den Trainings-betrieb, als auch für Wettkämpfe mit bis zu 7.000 Zuschauern. Die ca. 200 mal 90 Meter große Halle ist als in sich geschlossenes Bauwerk mit einer im Innenraum stützenfreien Konstruktion geplant. Mit einem intelligenten Energie-, Tageslicht- und Raumklimakonzept ist sie für einen wirtschaftlichen und nachhaltigen Betrieb ausgelegt. Eine besondere Rolle kommt dabei dem Dach zu - einer Fachwerkkonstruktion aus Holz und Stahl, die raumseitig mit einem textilen Kälteschirm ausgerüstet ist. Über große Öffnungen im Dach lenkt dieser diffus Tageslicht in den Innenraum. Leicht, transparent und hell, scheint das Dach wie eine Wolke frei über der Halle zu schweben.
Eine Tribüne aus Stahlbeton bietet Platz für Zuschauer und erscheint als modellierter Teil der Landschaft. Die umlaufende Glasfassade als „Fuge“ zwischen Dach und Landschaft bietet optimale Ausblicke auf die Bergkulisse und den Zwingsee. Gleichzeitig ermöglicht sie von außen Einblicke in den Innenraum. Die Uferwiesen des Sees können sich nun zur neuen Halle hin ausbreiten. An dieser südorientierten Lage liegt auch der große Besucherbalkon mit schönem Blick auf den See und in die Halle. Die Bestandsgebäude wurden in das Gesamtkonzept eingebunden, energetisch saniert und zum Teil baulich ergänzt. Hier sind Bürobereiche für die Stadionleitung und den Trainerstab, sowie Werkstätten und Garagen für die Eisbereitungsfahrzeuge untergebracht.

The Bavarian community of Inzell was the location of the 2011 Speed Skating World Championship. For this occasion the ice skating arena, spectacularly located at the foot of the Alps, was to be modernized. In order to offer optimal conditions required for this event, the ice skating track, originally an outdoor track, was to be provided with a dynamically formed, easily recognizable roof. The new arena offers maximal flexibility for training operations as well as for competitions with up to 7,000 spectators. The ca. 200 m by 90 m large arena was planned as a singular, free-spanning structure without columns in the interior space. With an intelligent energy, natural lighting, and interior climate concept the structure is designed for economic and sustainable operations. The roof plays a special roll for this task – a framework structure of wood and steel , equipped with a textile screen on the inside for insulation. Diffuse natural light is directed into the interior through large openings in the roof. Light, transparent, and hell, the roof seems to hover freely over the arena like a cloud.

The concrete stands offer seating for spectators and appear as a modelled part of the landscape. The continuous glass façade functions as a “seam” between the roof and landscape and offers optimal views to the background of mountains and the Zwingsee Lake. Simultaneously, passers-by have the opportunity to look into the stadium interior and catch a glimpse of daily activities. The shores of the lake now can spread out to the new arena, where a large balcony provides visitors with views on this south-oriented side over the lake and into the arena. The existing buildings were integrated into the overall concept, renovated for energy efficiency, and structurally completed in parts. They house the office areas for the stadium and coaching staffs as well as workshops and garages for the ice preparing machines.
